Venezuelan composer Gustavo Dudamel visited the MIT campus over the April 16-17,
2010 weekend to accept the $75,000 Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts presented
by the Council for the Arts at MIT. 2010 marked the first year where an actual, physical
award was presented to the recipient, since it’s inception in 1974. Adam&Co. designed
the physical award in conjunction with the overall identity for this prestigious, bi-annual
gift. One of the most generous arts honors in the US, the McDermott award is bestowed
upon individuals whose artistic accomplishments indicate that they will become great
leaders within their fields.
During his visit, Dudamel led the MIT Symphony Orchestra in a public rehearsal of
Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 (“Prague”) and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Capriccio Espagnol,”
and he joined MIT professors John Harbison and Tod Machover in a panel discussion
moderated by PBS journalist Maria Hinojosa on music as a social and educational project
highlighting El Sistema and Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles.

I had the great privilege of judging the 2009 AIGA New Orleans design show, alongside Michael Gericke of Pentagram. This was the chapter’s first design show in three years, so we saw a ton of great work. Our judging weekend just so happened to coincide with Halloween, which made for a really fun trip.
